Biodiesel Clears Senate committee in CO
Herald Denver Bureau, DENVER - A bill that would require the state to fill its trucks' gas tanks with biodiesel passed 5-1 in the Senate Transportation Committee.

The bill by Sen. Lewis Entz, R-Hooper, and Rep. Ray Rose-R-Montrose, would mandate the use of a 20-percent blend of biodiesel if the price of the alternative fuel is no more than 10 cents extra.

Sen. Jim Isgar, D-Hesperus, said the goal is to help a fledgling industry and local farmers, while also taking a small step away from foreign oil.

"You won't have to go to war with farmers in the San Luis Valley if we buy their biodiesel," he said. "If we can do something to help the farmers, we consider it a good thing."

Legislative staffers counted 37 state vehicles that would be affected by the bill. The bill does not cover Department of Transportation vehicles. The cost of biodiesel on the Front Range is less than 10 cents higher than regular diesel, so the switch to biodiesel would cost the state practically nothing, according to a legislative report.

The bill now goes to the full Senate.

The Colorado Petroleum Association, an industry lobby group, opposes the bill.
