JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Clif Bar and Co., an all-natural energy and nutrition foods company, set off on its second annual Natural Energy Tour today fueled by 100 percent biodiesel. The four-month trip throughout the eastern United States will promote the use of renewable energy.
The tour will make stops this summer at some of the largest music festivals, sporting events, art festivals and farmer’s markets. Two Clif Bar ambassadors will drive a biodiesel-fueled vehicle from Washington, DC to Boston, Mass. with many stops, including jaunts west, in between.
Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources like soybean oil. The fuel is nontoxic, biodegradable and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. Biodiesel offers similar fuel economy, horsepower and torque to petroleum diesel while providing superior lubricity. Biodiesel supplier World Energy Alternatives will donate the fuel to the tour.
“Global warming is the biggest environmental issue facing our planet,” said Clif Bar Lifestyle Marketing Supervisor Grady O’Shaughnessy. “Clif Bar recognizes the importance of educating consumers about the issue -- and how clean renewable energy and the use of alternative fuels fit into the equation.”
Clif Bar joins a growing number of businesses choosing biodiesel. “Companies with an environmentally friendly image, like L.L. Bean, New Belgium Brewery and Fetzer Vineyards, see biodiesel as an ideal way to reduce emissions without making any modifications to their diesel vehicles,” said Joe Jobe, executive director of the National Biodiesel Board. “Clif Bar and other businesses should be commended for showing their commitment to the environment by making this simple switch.”
Through the purchase of wind energy credits from NativeEnergy, the entire tour will be certified climate neutral and will have a net zero impact on global warming. During the tour, Clif Bar will encourage people to take actions to mitigate their impact on global warming.
Biodiesel is an effective way to mitigate global warming. It significantly reduces emissions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter, unburned hydrocarbons and sulfates. On a lifecycle basis, biodiesel reduces carbon dioxide by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel. It also has the highest energy balance of any fuel. For every unit of fossil energy it takes to make biodiesel, 3.2 units of energy are gained.
The Natural Energy Tour concludes September 30 in Boston. Featured stops along the way include the Boston and New York Triathlons, a pro cycling tour in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn.
